First Inaugural Military May Event is a Hit!
AGC Houston’s Vets in Construction group wrapped up Military Appreciation Month with our first annual Military May Shootout. The event was held at Boyert Shooting Center in Katy and consisted of a friendly shooting competition, simulator exercises, recreational shooting and a unique networking opportunity for military veterans currently working or seeking employment in commercial construction. Over 100 people participated, making it the largest private event the shooting center has ever had!
“Our Vets in Construction group formed a year ago as a subset of our Safety Committee. It has become an active networking forum for ex-military folks in our industry. Providing this opportunity for veterans in construction is our way of thanking them for their service to our country and to our industry,” says Kim Mason, Senior Director of Safety Services at AGC Houston.
The goal of this event was to support active military and veterans in construction through networking opportunities. In that spirit, 13 construction companies participated in the "adopt-a-vet" program to ensure that military personnel and vets who wanted to participate were able to! Several unemployed vets from NextOp were sponsored under this program.
“Making connections is what we’re all about,” says Tamara Hancock, Senior Director of Operations and Events at AGC Houston. “We were extremely happy with the turnout for our first event and look forward to hosting more networking opportunities for vets in the future,” she added.
A huge thanks goes out to event co-chairs, Howie Wright, U.S. Marine Corp, United Tool & Fasteners and Cedric Foster, U.S. Marine Corp, Joslin Construction for their leadership and guidance in planning the event. AGC’s Vets in Construction group is open to any veterans or active military working in the construction industry in Houston. AGC membership is not required. Please contact Kim Mason for details.
