AGC Houston Hosts Texas A&M Construction Academies for High School Students

This week, AGC Houston was pleased to host Texas A&M University’s (TAMU) Department of Construction Science Construction Academy Careers Program. The Academy is designed to increase the participants overall understanding of the construction profession and to acquaint them to potential careers in the industry. Thirty-one students, ages 14 – 17, from 25 schools in 13 different school districts attended the academy in Houston. The four-day event combines academic instruction along with fun social activities, including:
  • Design/build activities
  • Site visits
  • Construction technology
  • Presentations by construction faculty and industry staff
The students received industry overviews from McCarthy Building Companies and Webber Commercial Construction in the following disciplines:
  • Plan Reading
  • Craft Training
  • Safety Training
  • Leadership/Team Building
  • Interviewing and Resumes
  • Estimating
  • Scheduling
Additional highlights of the week included a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts jobsite as well as visits to the offices of both Webber and Marek Brothers Systems, Inc.
